How to Build Authentic Connections in the Creative Industry

Building a solid creative network is tough when you’re first starting out. (Trust me, I know. I didn’t know a soul in the creative industry until I was much older.) But, there are ways to build meaningful, authentic connections with others that doesn’t feel like “networking.” To me, networking is establishing deep, mutually-beneficial relationships where you hype each other up and keep an eye out for opportunities for one another, all while gaining a new friend!

Why Is Networking Important in the Creative Industry?

Networking is crucial when emerging into the creative industry. Sure, you can get opportunities and success all by yourself, but having a supportive community that lifts you up and that you can relate to makes the journey worthwhile. And as I’m sure you know, creative careers can be competitive. Knowing a familiar face that works at your dream company or meeting someone who can serve as a lifelong mentor can open so many doors for you.

How Do You Build a Network in the Creative Industry?

Building a network isn’t as cringey as it sounds. Here are a few ways you can organically build a network that’s authentic to you and your goals.

1. Connect With Your Network’s Network

Get in touch with your “2nd connections,” otherwise known as your network’s network. Say your friend knows someone who has your ultimate dream job. You could ask your friend to introduce you both so you can grab coffee and ask them for advice. Boom! Connection = made. You can also find 2nd connections through LinkedIn as well! And if you’re reading this, you’re part of my community, so don’t hesitate to reach out to me or any creative who’s on the podcast for advice or mentorship. We’re all happy to help!

2. Follow Creatives on Social Media

Speaking of socials, there are plenty of other ways to get in touch with other creatives online. Three social platforms I’d suggest starting off with would be Instagram, TikTok and Facebook. Before you roll your eyes at Facebook, just know I mean Facebook groups. These groups are an easy way to join a community and start conversations with others. I recommend using Facebook groups to find local creatives. TikTok is another great tool when looking for connections on the national or even international level! And with TikTok’s creepily-accurate algorithm, you know you’ll be getting in touch with likeminded people. Last but not least, Instagram is a fabulous community builder, especially when sparking conversations in DMs and comment sections.

3. Tap Into Your Alumni Network

I know, the dreaded alumni network. I promise that reaching out to fellow alumni is not as scary as it seems! Depending on your educational background, you can get in touch with either your high school and/or college colleagues through Facebook groups, LinkedIn, alumni events or through specific school-led alumni groups. Your alumni network can be a powerful resource because you can get in touch with creatives of all ages, all while having a common interest: Your university! I recommend turning to this resource for finding a mentor.

4. Attend Networking Events

Networking events are so underrated! You can meet so many wonderful individuals at them. Plus, everyone is (probably) feeling just as nervous as you are because you’re all in the same boat trying to network with one another. If you’re new to networking, I’d try practicing at a networking event where everyone is open and looking for the same thing you are: To meet other creatives!

5. Join Local Communities

Whether you join a volunteer organization or a career-focused group, local communities can’t be beat. Networking locally is crucial for service-based entrepreneurs and in-office creatives. I also highly recommend this networking type for anyone who is new to a community.
